A sharp drop in temperatures was recorded across Himachal Pradesh on Wednesday after widespread snowfall, hail and rain lashed the state under an orange weather alert. The sudden change in weather brought back winter-like conditions in several regions, especially in the higher altitudes.
According to the state Meteorological Centre, fresh snowfall was reported in the higher hills, including the tribal districts of Lahaul and Spiti and Kinnaur. Snowfall also occurred in elevated areas of Kullu, including the Atal Tunnel, as well as parts of Shimla district such as Kufri, Narkanda, Chopal and Kotkhai.
Along with snowfall, several regions experienced significant rainfall. Berthin village in Hamirpur recorded the highest precipitation at 50.6 mm, followed by Solan with 48 mm and Kasauli at 43 mm. Kangra received 39.4 mm, Bilaspur 34.6 mm, and Sundernagar 33.8 mm. Other areas, including Una, Shimla, Dharamsala, Mandi and Paonta Sahib, also witnessed moderate rainfall.

The Meteorological Department has issued a yellow weather warning for April 9 for districts including Shimla, Kullu, Mandi, Kangra and Chamba. Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are likely in these regions. Light rain and snowfall are expected to persist across the state until April 12, after which weather conditions are forecast to improve.
While minimum temperatures are likely to rise by 3°C to 4°C over the coming days, maximum temperatures are expected to increase by 4°C to 8°C, indicating a gradual return to normal conditions.
