DMK has allotted eight Assembly constituencies to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) as part of their alliance for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly Elections 2026.
Confirming the development, VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan said the party will contest all eight seats on its ‘Pot’ symbol. The agreement follows multiple rounds of seat-sharing negotiations between the allies, which initially remained inconclusive as the VCK sought a higher share than in 2021, when it contested six seats.
The breakthrough came after a meeting between Thirumavalavan and M. K. Stalin, Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu and DMK President, at Anna Arivalayam in Chennai, where the formal pact was signed. Under the agreement, the VCK has been allocated eight constituencies, comprising six reserved seats and two general seats. Thirumavalavan said the party accepted the allocation in the broader interest of alliance unity and to safeguard democratic and secular politics in the state.
“We have taken this decision with responsibility, ensuring that minor differences do not weaken the alliance’s electoral prospects,” he said.
He further noted that the DMK has allotted a total of 18 seats to Left-leaning and allied parties, including five seats each to the CPI and the CPI(M). In addition, the DMK has allocated one seat in Puducherry to the VCK. Thirumavalavan said nominations were filed in three constituencies there as a precaution due to time constraints.
Describing the allocation as “meaningful,” he reiterated that the party would contest all eight seats on its own symbol. While the VCK has sought a Rajya Sabha seat, he indicated that the demand is not being actively pursued at present.
Seat-sharing discussions are expected to continue with other allies, including the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam and the Makkal Needhi Maiam, to finalise the remaining arrangements.
The agreement is being seen as a significant step in consolidating the DMK-led secular progressive alliance ahead of the Assembly elections.
