A senior officer of the Haryana government died on Wednesday after he allegedly jumped from the sixth floor of the Civil Secretariat building in Chandigarh.
The deceased has been identified as 58-year-old Ganesh Das Arora. He was serving as a special secretary at the Haryana Civil Secretariat and was attached to a senior IAS officer. The police recovered a suicide note from the spot. In the note, he stated that he was “under no pressure from either family or office” and did not blame anyone for his decision.
Police officials, however, said they are looking into all possible angles, including whether Arora was facing any harassment or work-related stress. Investigating officers said Arora lived in Zirakpur’s Sushma Enclave and was set to retire in October. He was reportedly disturbed over a recent departmental transfer.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident happened around 12.30 pm. Arora reportedly got up from his desk, walked towards the sixth-floor balcony and jumped before colleagues or security personnel could react or stop him.
Officials also revealed that this was not the first time he had tried to harm himself. Nearly 15 days ago, he had allegedly attempted to climb onto the roof of the secretariat building but was stopped in time by his coworkers.
The suicide note has been sent to the Central Forensic Science Laboratory for examination. Arora is survived by his wife, who is at present posted at the Haryana Raj Bhavan. The family has not released any public statement so far.
