Acting on the directives of Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, the Himachal Pradesh Police have intensified their crackdown on drug trafficking, detaining eight individuals under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (PIT-NDPS) Act within the past week.
The move is part of the state’s ongoing efforts to curb the drug menace and dismantle networks involved in the illegal trade.
According to a spokesperson from the Police Department, the individuals detained are from Nurpur, Sirmaur, Chamba, Baddi-Barotiwala-Nalagarh in Solan district, and Kangra.
These individuals have a history of repeated involvement in drug trafficking, making them the focus of stringent action under the PIT-NDPS Act. The law, which allows preventive detention of habitual offenders, is being actively enforced to disrupt organised drug operations across the state.
Chief Minister Sukhu has taken a tough stance on drug-related crimes, instructing law enforcement agencies to adopt uncompromising measures against those engaged in drug trafficking, regardless of their status or influence.
He has held multiple high-level meetings with law enforcement officials and other concerned departments to ensure strict implementation of anti-drug laws.

The state government has been proactive in utilising the PIT-NDPS Act as a preventive measure against drug-related crimes. On April 23, 2023, an advisory board, chaired by a Justice of the Himachal Pradesh High Court, was established to oversee legal proceedings related to preventive detentions.
The act was initially enforced in 2024, leading to the detention of four individuals at the time. With the latest arrests, the total number of detainees under the law has now risen to twelve.
Additionally, financial investigations are being conducted into the assets of the detained individuals, with legal action expected based on the findings.
The state government has reiterated its commitment to making Himachal Pradesh drug-free and continues to take aggressive steps in its fight against the drug mafia, ensuring strict enforcement of laws to protect public welfare.
