The Himachal Pradesh government has formally notified the separation of cadres between the Directorate of Medical Education (DME) and the Directorate of Health Services (DHS), a move aimed at streamlining administrative efficiency and strengthening the state’s healthcare system.
This restructuring allows for more specialised management and recruitment, ensuring that both directorates operate with clearly defined roles and responsibilities.
According to an official spokesperson, employees across various categories, including nursing, paramedical staff, ministerial staff, radiographers, operation theatre assistants, drivers, and Class-IV employees, were given the opportunity to select their preferred cadre.
As a result, 74.44 percent of the total staff chose to be part of the DHS, while the remaining opted for DME. In numerical terms, 14,573 employees have aligned with the DHS, whereas 5,002 have opted for the DME.
To mitigate workforce shortages and enhance healthcare service delivery, the government will now undertake separate recruitment processes for both directorates. This approach is expected to facilitate balanced staffing, ensuring that hospitals, medical colleges, and other health institutions across the state function with adequate personnel. The decision is in line with the government's broader vision of improving healthcare accessibility and efficiency in Himachal Pradesh.

The spokesperson highlighted that this move is part of a series of reforms undertaken by the state government over the past two years to enhance healthcare infrastructure.
As part of these efforts, outdated medical equipment in health institutions will soon be replaced with advanced technology, further modernising medical facilities and improving patient care.
Reiterating its commitment to strengthening the healthcare system, the Himachal Pradesh government has assured that it will continue implementing necessary reforms to ensure accessible, high-quality medical services for all residents of the state.
