Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Chief Tariq Hamid Karra said on Thursday the party high command would take the final decision regarding its strategy for the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections, likely to be held on October 24.
He said, “The important matter will be discussed with the party leadership, and they will examine all aspects before taking a final call.”
When asked to specify what strategies the party was considering, he refused to comment.
In the upcoming Rajya Sabha polls, the NC-Congress alliance is poised to comfortably win three out of the four seats.
It is expected that the Congress, which has six MLAs in J&K, could seek one of the three “safe” seats. Sources said the party might field Ghulam Ahmad Mir, MLA from Dooru, who is already playing a role at the national level.
Mir was appointed the party’s general secretary in charge of Jharkhand in December 2023 and is currently serving as general secretary in charge of West Bengal. Mir’s leadership skills played a positive role in both the Jharkhand and West Bengal Lok Sabha elections, where the Congress managed to win 16 and two seats, respectively.
However, Congress may likely consider fielding another senior leader from Jammu, which was once a stronghold of the party, though it has failed to secure even a single seat in the Lok Sabha for the past ten years.
