Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday led a mega roadshow in Gangtok after arriving in Sikkim to attend the closing ceremony marking 50 years of the state’s formation.
Modi, dressed in a traditional Bhutia cap and a Lepcha coat, was received at Libing helipad by Governor Om Prakash Mathur and Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang.
From the helipad, the Prime Minister began an hour-long roadshow through the state capital, culminating at Lok Bhavan, where he is scheduled to stay overnight. Riding in an open vehicle, Modi was flanked by Tamang and state BJP president D R Thapa.
Large crowds gathered along the route, waving national flags and cheering as the convoy moved slowly through the city. Supporters chanted slogans and showered flower petals, while the Prime Minister acknowledged them by waving throughout the procession.
The route was decorated with arch gates and large cut-outs, reflecting the festive mood in the city ahead of the statehood celebrations. Tamang was also seen encouraging people to greet the Prime Minister during the roadshow.

On Tuesday, Modi will visit the Orchidarium in Gangtok, where the ‘Swarnajayanti Maitri Manjari’ Park has been developed as a world-class Orchid Experience Centre to showcase Sikkim’s ecological and floral heritage.
He is also scheduled to attend the closing ceremony of the golden jubilee celebrations at Paljor Stadium, where he will unveil development projects worth over Rs 4,000 crore. The projects span multiple sectors, including infrastructure, connectivity, healthcare, education, power, urban development, environment, tourism and agriculture.
The Prime Minister is expected to address a public gathering at the event.
Modi had earlier been slated to attend the opening ceremony of the year-long celebrations but was unable to do so due to inclement weather. He had instead addressed the programme virtually from Siliguri in neighbouring West Bengal.
Chief Minister Tamang later thanked the people for the grand reception accorded to the Prime Minister, stating that the turnout reflected the affection and respect people in Sikkim have for his leadership.
