Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to the stage in Gogamukh on Wednesday, sounding a confident note for the Bharatiya Janata Party’s prospects as he kicked off his first public rally since the announcement of the Assam Assembly elections. Addressing a massive crowd, the Prime Minister framed the last decade as a transformative "era of service," expressing absolute certainty that the NDA is headed for a "hat-trick" of victories in the state.
During his speech, Modi took a sharp swipe at the Congress leadership, particularly aimed at Rahul Gandhi. He suggested that the upcoming polls would not only cement a third term for the current administration but would also mark a "century of defeats" for the Congress’s "self-proclaimed prince." Crediting the successive leadership of Sarbananda Sonowal and Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Prime Minister argued that the state has finally moved past years of stagnation to become a cornerstone of his "Developed India" vision.
The Prime Minister pointed to the sheer size of the gathering as "living proof" of an impending electoral sweep. Having recently secured his own third term in New Delhi, he drew a parallel to the local contest, telling supporters that their enthusiasm made a third consecutive win in Assam a foregone conclusion.
Turning to the BJP’s manifesto, Modi laid out a series of high-stakes welfare promises. He pledged that an additional 15 lakh families would receive "pucca" houses under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, following the 22 lakh already completed. Furthermore, the Prime Minister set an ambitious target for the "Lakhpati Didi" scheme, aiming to elevate 40 lakh women to that status, noting that 3 lakh "Lakhpati Baideos" have already found success in the state.
With polling for all 126 constituencies set to take place in a single phase on April 9, the battle lines are clearly drawn. The BJP-led alliance, which includes the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and the Bodoland People's Front (BPF), is pulling out all the stops to hold off a Congress opposition desperate to reclaim its former stronghold. All eyes now turn to 4 May, when the votes will be counted to decide if the "hat-trick" predicted in Gogamukh becomes a reality.
