Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday visited a tea garden in poll-bound Assam, plucking tea leaves and engaging with women workers at the Manohari Tea Estate. During his hour-long visit, he spoke about their culture, took a selfie with the women, and discussed issues such as education, healthcare, and wages.
Sharing photographs of the visit on his official X handle, Modi wrote: “We are very proud of the efforts of each and every tea garden family. Their hard work and perseverance have enhanced Assam’s pride.” He described the visit as a “very memorable experience,” noting that Assam’s tea has earned recognition across the world.
The Prime Minister, on a day-long campaign in the state ahead of the April 9 Assembly polls, highlighted the empowerment of tea garden workers through land rights and welfare initiatives. He called these measures a historic step in ensuring dignity and long-term security for lakhs of families. Modi urged party workers to focus on booth-level engagement, voter education, and communicating the state’s development achievements.
At a rally on Tuesday, Modi had underlined Assam’s transition from instability to peace and progress under the BJP government, particularly praising peace agreements in Bodoland for contributing to lasting stability. He also stressed the need to protect Assam’s identity and tackle illegal infiltration, describing it as an issue of security, culture, and justice.

The tea gardens of Assam, particularly in Dibrugarh and the Brahmaputra Valley, play a critical role in local livelihoods. The state is the world’s largest tea-producing region, with over 1,000 estates contributing more than half of India’s total tea output, known especially for robust black and CTC teas. Modi’s interaction with women workers highlighted their contributions to this sector and the government’s focus on their welfare.
During the visit, Modi participated in plucking tea leaves and placing them in a traditional basket alongside 19 women dressed in white sarees with red borders. He also listened to their concerns regarding work conditions and community welfare. The Prime Minister’s engagement underscored the BJP’s emphasis on connecting with grassroots workers and understanding their needs firsthand.
The visit comes as the state gears up for elections on April 9, with tea garden workers forming a significant section of the electorate. Modi’s outreach to this community signals the party’s commitment to addressing their long-standing issues and reinforcing development initiatives in the region.
