The Hoshiarpur police have arrested Punjab Police Inspector Gurinderjit Singh Nagra, a former Station House Officer (SHO) of Tanda police station, in connection with an international extortion case targeting Indian-origin families in the United States.
According to the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Gurinderjit was allegedly involved in an extortion racket that targeted Indian-origin families, primarily from Punjab, living in the US. He was named as one of the accused in the chargesheet filed by the FBI on February 7 earlier this year.
The cop was reportedly linked to the gangs of dreaded criminals Lawrence Bishnoi and Jaggu Bhagwanpuria and allegedly helped target families based in the United States.
Shortly after his name surfaced in the chargesheet, the Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Hoshiarpur, ordered his immediate transfer to the police lines.
Later, official sources confirmed Gurinderjit's arrest and said further details of the case would be shared later in the day, as the investigation is still in progress. His arrest comes a day after the FBI arrested India-linked gangster Nitish Kaushal alias "Lala", just two days after placing him on its Most Wanted list for his alleged role in a Punjab-origin transnational organised crime syndicate.
A 44-page unclassified document released in Los Angeles alleged that operatives were paid as little as $20,000 to carry out killings in different parts of Punjab.
Investigators also said that more than 24 suspects belonging to the gangs linked to Indian-origin individuals were arrested during Operation Hardball.
Besides, investigators reportedly recovered 1,000 kg of cocaine, 1 kg of heroin, firearms and cash. Several suspects remain absconding.
