Rohtak uses mirrors to discourage public urination, littering

Municipal Commissioner Narendra Kumar said the idea is based on behavioural psychology. He explained that people are less likely to engage in such activities when they see their own reflection. The mirror is expected to act as a reminder and encourage people to use the nearby toilet instead.

In a unique effort to tackle public urination and littering, the Rohtak Municipal Corporation (MC) has started a new initiative at Sheela Bypass. A mirror has been installed on a wall that was frequently used for open urination, even though a public toilet is there nearby.

The wall had been decorated with paintings and beautification work by the civic body. However, people continued to urinate there, damaging the artwork and creating an unpleasant atmosphere for pedestrians.

Municipal Commissioner Narendra Kumar said the idea is based on behavioural psychology. He explained that people are less likely to engage in such activities when they see their own reflection. The mirror is expected to act as a reminder and encourage people to use the nearby toilet instead.

Officials said the civic body has identified many other spots in the city where open urination remains a problem. Many of these locations are under flyovers, including areas near the Old ITI Ground and along Jind Road. Similar measures may be introduced there as well.

Kumar said Rohtak has over 90 public toilets that are regularly maintained for public use. Despite these facilities being available, some people continue to urinate in the open, creating sanitation and cleanliness issues.

He appealed to residents to cooperate with the initiative and help keep public places clean. According to him, public participation along with innovative ideas can help improve hygiene and protect the city's beautification efforts.

To tackle illegal garbage dumping, the Municipal Corporation has also begun installing CCTV cameras at garbage-vulnerable points across the city.
Kumar said four such locations are already under surveillance, and more areas will be covered soon. Warning boards have been put up to inform people that  the sites are being monitored. He added that videos of those caught littering will be displayed on LED screens at Delhi Bypass and Medical Mor Chowk to discourage such behaviour and promote responsible waste disposal.

The civic body has also installed benches and improved the surroundings near the Raj Cinema area to prevent garbage dumping. The space has been beautified to encourage public use, as well-maintained and frequently used areas are less likely to attract littering.

Kumar said the location had become a major dumping spot, with large amounts of waste being thrown along the roadside every day. The corporation is now working to convert such areas into clean and attractive public spaces.
