Soon after the conclusion of the first phase of the West Bengal Assembly election on 152 constituencies, Trinamool Congress (TMC) General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee on Friday made a strong claim about the outcome, asserting that the party had already crossed 100 seats.

Addressing an election rally in Jagatballavpur, Banerjee said, “Trinamool crossed the century mark yesterday itself. You will be able to verify this when the results are declared.” Projecting confidence, he added that while he does not usually make predictions, his past assessments had proven accurate, citing previous elections as examples.

Taking a swipe at the BJP, Banerjee alleged that the party was showing signs of nervousness following the first phase of polling. He claimed that BJP leaders, sensing defeat, were reaching out to media outlets in an attempt to influence coverage in their favour.

The TMC leader also responded to remarks made by Union Home Minister Amit Shah, who had earlier projected that the BJP would win over 110 seats in the first phase. Without naming Shah directly, Banerjee criticised such claims, suggesting that they reflected desperation within the BJP camp.

In a sharp political attack, Banerjee accused the BJP of attempting to divide votes and intimidate voters, reiterating the party’s stance on the “outsider” narrative. He said that leaders from outside the state could not influence the electorate, adding that people of Bengal were responding through the ballot.

Referring to a recent exchange involving his comment, “the heat is rising; drink water,” Banerjee dismissed allegations that it was intended as an insult. He maintained that the BJP’s reaction to the remark indicated insecurity.

With visible confidence, Banerjee urged party workers to remain motivated, asserting that the TMC would continue its momentum in the upcoming phases of polling. Political observers note that his remarks signal an attempt by the party leadership to project early confidence and consolidate support ahead of the remaining stages of the election.
