In the upcoming Uttarakhand local body elections, women are expected to play a major role for both the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress. The BJP has nominated women for 44 out of 100 wards, while the Congress has chosen 45 women candidates.
With women making up almost half of the population in municipal areas, both parties have strategically selected women for 44 per cent and 45 per cent of the ward councillor positions.
Both BJP and Congress recognise the importance of female leadership and have nominated women even in general wards where women leaders are prominent.
Women’s impact on elections
In these municipal elections, women will not only influence the outcome through voting but also in shaping the council. Many of the BJP’s women candidates are active members of the BJP Mahila Morcha Mahanagar and participate actively in party events.
Similarly, Congress has given leadership roles to active and hardworking women office bearers in their wards.

Increased campaign efforts by both parties
Both BJP and Congress are strengthening their campaigns by organizing groups of women who campaign every day in their wards. Leading BJP figures like Cantt MLA Savita Kapoor and BJYM national vice president Neha Joshi are campaigning for the party's female candidates.
On the Congress side, leaders such as Mahila Congress President Jyoti Rautela and spokespersons Garima Mahara Dasauni, Sonia Anand, and Asha Manorama Sharma Dobariyal are taking charge.
Door-to-door campaigning by women candidates
Young women from BJYM and Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad are going door-to-door to support BJP female councilor candidates. Similarly, women from Youth Congress and NSUI are campaigning for Congress female candidates by forming groups and reaching out to voters.
Women candidates are also organising religious and cultural programmes to connect with voters. Metropolitan Congress President Dr. Jaswinder Singh Gogi emphasised that the party values women’s power and provides opportunities for them to lead.
He noted that women have been key to the development of Uttarakhand, from the state movement to today.
