A wedding held at a 200-year-old temple in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has caused controversy, leading authorities to investigate the matter. The wedding took place on Sunday at the Gopal Mandir, located in the Rajbada area of the city.

The temple was recently renovated as part of the Centre's Smart City project. Witnesses reported that the temple was decorated for the wedding ceremony, Vedic rituals were performed, and a feast was held for guests. However, local residents have complained about the disruption caused by the event.

They said it inconvenienced visitors and devotees and also caused traffic issues near the temple.

Photographs of the event were shared on social media, with many questioning how permission was granted for a wedding at such an important historical site.

A receipt from the event also appeared online, showing that Rajkumar Agrawal paid Rs 25,551 to the temple management for the wedding. The receipt, which has a government seal, is dated July 29, 2024.

In response to the controversy, officials have ordered an investigation. An additional district magistrate (ADM) has been tasked with looking into the matter.

Divyank Singh, CEO of Indore Smart City Development Limited, confirmed that the Gopal Mandir, which dates back to the Holkar era in the 19th century, was renovated under the Smart City project at a cost of Rs 13 crore.

Historian Zafar Ansari, speaking about the temple’s history, said it was built by Rajmata Krishna Bai Holkar in 1832 at a cost of Rs 80,000.

He expressed concern over the wedding, stating that such events could harm the historical significance of the temple, which was once a major center for charitable activities during the Holkar reign.
