The recent developments surrounding Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and the excise policy case have stirred significant controversy, with the Directorate of Enforcement (ED) objecting to a campaign speech made by Kejriwal.

 

During the ongoing Lok Sabha elections, Kejriwal allegedly stated that voting for his party could prevent his imprisonment. However, the Supreme Court, while addressing Kejriwal's plea against arrest and remand in the excise policy case, emphasised that its order remains clear regarding his surrender on June 2nd.

 

Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the ED, expressed objection to Kejriwal's remarks, describing them as undermining the institution. Kejriwal's legal counsel, Senior Advocate Abhishek Manu Singhvi, countered by suggesting the possibility of filing an affidavit regarding statements made by a government minister concerning the Supreme Court's interim bail order.

 

In response, the bench refrained from delving into these matters, asserting that it did not make exceptions for any individual when granting bail. Despite being granted interim bail to participate in Lok Sabha campaigning, Kejriwal faces the obligation to surrender on June 2nd.

 

Kejriwal's comments during election rallies, particularly regarding his potential return to Tihar Jail, have drawn criticism, notably from Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

 

Shah labelled Kejriwal's remarks as a "clear contempt of the Supreme Court" and urged the judges involved to scrutinise whether their order was properly executed.

 

In an exclusive interview with a media agency, Shah expressed concerns over the perceived special treatment afforded to Kejriwal by the Supreme Court in the excise policy case. He emphasised that many view the judgement as exceptional, suggesting a departure from routine judicial procedures.
